Inheritance change will lead to spite

I READ your article on inheritance with interest (Connexion, April).

Napoleon was a younger son and felt he had not been treated fairly in the matter of inheritance. When in power, he imposed his idea on France and basically it has lasted 200 years.

Probably throughout the whole period, many French people would have preferred the British system. It is surprising the French have opened this door as if this concession is given to British people living in France, the same “freedom” will soon be demanded by the French.

I appreciate that you and Gerard Barron just reported in a neutral way what had been decided. But solicitors are aware that many will try to squeeze through the loophole.

Maître Trémosa says the changes are “very important, especially for people with children from a previous marriage who want to leave everything to their current spouse” ie: to be “free” to exercise spite, prejudice and irresponsibility.

Any solicitor practising in Britain can give examples of the most absurd and unfair wills being made based on prejudice, favouritism and intrigue. Much misery is created.
