A podcast hosted by three British women running renovation businesses across France is set to reveal the truth about home restoration in one of Europe’s most challenging property markets.

The French Reno Diaries Uncensored, produced by former BBC Woman’s Hour producer Katy Wright, draws on the combined experience of Rosie Ellis, Micala Wilkins, and Sue Peake-Russell.

The series explores French bureaucracy, construction rules, planning permissions, diagnostics, and the everyday hurdles faced by homeowners and tradespeople.

Episodes run for between 45 minutes and an hour and the series launched on January 6.

The three women live in different parts of France but connected via dedicated Facebook groups and WhatsApp chats, from where the idea for a podcast was sparked.

“We noticed people were asking for advice based on outdated information,” Sue says.

“We felt we needed to give them real facts rather than untruths. There’s a lot of misinformation about what you do and don’t need, and our aim is to set people straight, educate homeowners, and guide them safely through the process.”

Each member of the trio brings their own story and unique perspective on the challenges of property renovation in France.

Rosie left a career in fashion in 2018 to help run Maison Bretagne, a family renovation business in Brittany owned by her partner Jon.

She works closely with architects and artisans to bring clients’ designs to life while managing quotes, invoicing, salaries, and team training.

Micala moved to Lorigné (Deux-Sèvres) in 2012 with her husband Paul, a City & Guilds-trained electrician.

Arriving pre-Brexit allowed Paul to register with the Chambre de Métiers and start work immediately. Micala, with a background in administration and marketing, took on the business side of Paul’s company and now mentors other trade businesses.

Sue spent 30 years in hospitality and childcare before switching to work part-time in her husband’s carpentry and building company in Gers. She now manages scheduling, planning, paperwork, and customer liaison.

Years of hands-on experience have taught her to read diagnostic reports, navigate mairie requirements, and understand French renovation tax rules.

Producer Katy Wright, who spent more than a decade at the BBC, said that the trio’s combined expertise brings a rich dynamic to the podcast.

“Rosie and Sue both work on full renovations, while Micala specialises in electrics, which is critical in any project. Micala often asks questions from the perspective of someone new to renovating in France, helping listeners understand the practical realities.”

Listeners can expect a mix of humour, insight, practical advice, and the occasional rant, offering reassurance for anyone dreaming of owning a French home or deep into a renovation project.

“If we can help people even a little on their own renovation journey, that’s a win,” says Rosie.

“We’re highlighting the rules, the real costs, and the practicalities of working in France. At the same time, we’re having fun, sharing stories, and giving listeners a behind-the-scenes look at renovation projects most people never see.”

Episodes cover everything from insurance and planning protocols to dealing with artisans, surviving reality TV renovation pressures, choosing the right materials, understanding décennale insurance, and navigating French cultural expectations.

The podcast also addresses the misleading depictions often seen on DIY YouTube channels and reality TV, where renovations appear easy but omit critical details about insurance, legal requirements, and local artisans.

“There’s a lot going on behind the scenes that people don’t see, and it can be dangerous if they try to replicate it without guidance,” says Sue.
