Besides Phoenix, few French bands (i.e. not DJs or producers such as Daft Punk) have enjoyed mainstream success in the Anglophone market. This is a shame because there are plenty of excellent bands out there – perhaps it is because they sing in French (unlike Phoenix) that the songs just do not translate well to the non French-speaking music lover.

Among these groups is Superbus, a five-piece pop-rock band formed in 1999 and featuring Jennifer Ayache (aka Jenn) on lead vocals. Trivia – her mother is Chantal Lauby, a member of the superb comedy ensemble, Les Nuls.

The French would pigeonhole the group as ‘rock’ but this interpretation differs from what we would call rock – it is lighter and more melodic than, say, Foo Fighters. It is closer to the sound of No Doubt.

Included on their latest album, their seventh, is a reworking of one of their best known songs, Lola, from 2007. It features Nicola Sirkis from legendary French group Indochine and was a streaming sensation last summer (13 million streams and counting).

Superbus is out on tour throughout France in October and November.
