A visit to an ophthalmologist is required to get a prescription for glasses in France

To the Editor,

I am sure there is a wide range of experiences when it comes to eye care in France, but I cannot fault the system.

While on holiday a couple of years ago outside France, I self-diagnosed a possible serious eye issue. Risky, I know, but I was able to make an online appointment with an ophthalmologist for several days after my return.

My diagnosis was unfortunately confirmed and I was immediately referred to a specialist, who provided a second verification.

Within days I was receiving treatment in hospital – all within a week of returning to France. The entire hospital visit (medication, specialist and other staff) was fully funded by the French system, and the top-up for the specialist’s initial examination was covered by my mutuelle. My experience with the Australian and Canadian health systems tells me I would have been lucky even to get an appointment with a specialist in that timeframe.

I continue to receive excellent care for my ongoing condition. And, as an aside, basic glasses (frames and lenses) are covered by the French health system, with tests available every second year. That is a pretty good deal, in my opinion.
