Music choice: Niagara's album Encore un dernier baiser
Rennes synth-rock band was behind 1980s hits including L’amour à la plage
If you tune into the popular French radio station Nostalgie – which launched in 1983 and today focuses on classic hits and, as the name suggests, nostalgic music – you will regularly hear French pop from the 1980s (76% of its output is from that decade).
While much of the music has dated somewhat (especially in terms of the production sound), there are still some gems to be found, and it’s a great station to listen to when driving.
Among the groups you may hear is Niagara, referred to rather generously by some music critics as the Breton version of the Eurythmics.
They were a synth-rock band formed in Rennes in 1985 that achieved considerable success in France and Canada.
After winning a kind of talent contest held by the Ministry of Culture, singer Muriel Moreno and keyboardist Daniel Chenevez went on to release a debut single, Tchiki boum, which led to them being signed by major record label Polydor. They released four studio albums before splitting in 1992.
Their most streamed song on Spotify is L’amour à la plage, from May 1986 – the perfect song to begin exploring their very ‘of its time’ oeuvre.
