7 things to see during the European heritage days
European heritage days or les journées du patrimoine, which take place this weekend in France, are the perfect occasion to visit most museums and monuments for free.
The annual event aims to make culture more accessible to everyone. The theme of the event varies every year, and this year it is arts and entertainment in the spotlight.
Here we have picked a few events across the country.
1. Guided tour of La Lieutenance in Honfleur
La Lieutenance is a historical monument, one of the last vestiges of Honfleur’s fortifications. On Saturday and Sunday 21-22, guided tours are offered all day to reveal the history of the building.
2. Guided tour of Tourrettes-sur-loup
Between sea and mountains, the village of Tourrettes-sur-loup is known for its small streets. For this tour, visitors can discover the castle, the church and chapel, and the artisans, along with some local delicacies. For more information and to reserve call 04 93 24 18 93
3. Sunrise at la Dune du Pilat
Waking up early to see the sunrise at the top of the Dune du Pilat can be a good way to start your Saturday. After the walk, you will be invited to listen to a reading on the dune. The departure is at 7.00am. Call 05 56 22 12 85 or email information@ladunedupilat.com to reserve.
4. Brest naval museum
Across the weekend, the Musée National de la Marine of Brest offers guided tours and conferences around the museum, the castle and the sculptures, on the theme of arts and entertainment.
5. Guided tour at Strasbourg cathedral
On Saturday 21, from 10.30-12.00, a guided tour of the famous cathedral – which is on the Unesco World Heritage’s list – is available. The meeting point is place de la Cathédrale.
6. Château de Fontainebleau
Guided tours, fencing shows, games and concerts are organised at Fontainebleau chateau across the whole weekend.
7. Tour Perret in Grenoble
The association LPO (Ligue pour la Protection des Oiseaux) organises a guided tour at Tour Perret, an observation tower in the Parc Mistral in Grenoble, to discover more about the local birds and the history of the tower. The guided tours take place from Saturday 21 at 14.00pm to 18.00pm and continue on Sunday 22 from 10.00am to 18.00pm.
