Areas of Brittany and Normandy under alert tonight for violent winds
Some areas are expected to see gusts of 110-130km/h on the coast and 90-110km/h inland
The departments of Finistère, Morbihan, Côtes-d’Armor and Manche are being placed under an orange weather warning for violent winds, which will come into effect this evening (October 31).
National weather forecasting service Météo France states that: “In the departments on an orange alert, the westerly and southwesterly winds will become markedly stronger in the evening.
“For a few hours, gusts will reach 110-130km/h on the coast and 90-110km/h inland, with the Cotentin [Peninsula] being the most exposed.
“Finally, as the night wears on, the stronger winds will move to Manche and towards Pas-de-Calais.”
The orange alert will remain in place between 21:00 and 03:00 tomorrow morning.
A further 33 departments in the north west, north and east of France are also under a yellow alert for high winds today.
Some 16 departments, including Manche and Finistère, are on yellow alert for storms as well.
For more information on the departments affected, you can visit the Météo France website.
Do I need to do anything?
People in the departments under an orange alert should:
- Secure any possessions which could be blown away
- Keep up to date with the situation
- Avoid going out when the wind is at its strongest
- Be aware of the risk of falling trees and other objects
- Not go up onto their roof
