If vehicle drivers are banned from using mobiles on the road, pedestrians should be too, says senator

PEOPLE should be banned from using their mobile phone while crossing the road, according to a French senator.

Senator Pierre Bernard-Reymond has sent a written question to the Interior Minister Manuel Valls, asking why pedestrians are currently allowed to use their phones when on the road.

“I don’t see why we ban drivers from using their phones while driving, while pedestrians cross while telephoning. It distracts attention and poses a safety risk,” said the senator in a letter published by PC Impact.

He said that people using pedestrian crossings or walking alongside roads where no footpath exists should be banned from using their handset.

People walking on the pavements would not be targeted, he later clarified.
