CCTV to catch dog poo owners

Town mayor turns cameras to the pavements to tackle irresponsible owners of dogs

A MAYOR has drafted his town’s CCTV system into the fight against dog poo on the pavements.

Former minister Yves Jégo, the mayor of Montereau-Fault-Yonne in Seine-et-Marne, has announced that the 60 cameras in the 15,000-people town will also be used to track down dog owners who fail to clean up after their pet.

Irresponsible owners will be fined €35.

“The advantage of the cameras is that the owner can’t deny it because we have the photo,” said Mr Jégo.

“I have a lot of complaints from mothers taking their children to school who find dog mess because the street cleaners haven’t passed yet,” he added.

The cameras have been in place in the town for 10 years.

Several cities including Paris, Nice and Chartres have used their CCTV systems to dispense automatic fines for motoring offences, such as double-parking or jumping red lights, but they have yet to turn their attention to dogs.
