Changing from UK to France for tax
How do we manage the changeover from the UK to the French systems now that we have moved to France?
My wife and I live permanently and only in France. My wife and I (both retired and age 61) have said that we became resident in France for tax purposes on April 17, 2007.
We made sure that our income tax affairs in the UK were correct as at April 5, 2007.
We wrote in December to our local tax office in France asking for tax relief on our future pension payments paid in the UK (state and private – none of which result from Government employment) and have asked that we become tax payers here in France.
We sent the French office completed FD5`s at the same time and also sent completed P85`s to the UK tax people back in September 2007
We also sent to the French tax office paperwork to substantiate our residential status and identities.
We are also looking to recover income tax paid on our pensions in the UK as from April 17, 2007.
Are we on the right track and are we likely to succeed in getting back the UK tax as from the date we became French residents? (Even if it does takes ages to get our tax status here sorted).
Also as another UK tax year has now passed what should we also be doing?
We visited the local French tax office today and they simply said that we should visit them again in May 2008 and collect 2 French tax return forms but they would not comment on the letter and correspondence we sent them on 11.12.07. Does that sound normal?

Your FD5s should be submitted with your French tax returns in May, to the French tax office, although yes, do note that your first French tax returns will have to be collected or downloaded from the internet.
