Covid-19 France: 404 new deaths

Covid-19 has now killed at least 20,796 people in France - but the number of hospitalisations continue to decrease, the general director of health Jerôme Salomon announced last night.

There have been 404 deaths from the virus at hospitals in the previous 24 hours, he said.

It means there has now been in total 12,900 deaths in hospitals and 7,896 in retirement homes (Ehpads) since the start of the epidemic.

30,106 people are still in hospital with 5,433 of these in intensive care. This compares to 30,584 people at the hospital and 5,683 in intensive care the day before. The number of people in intensive care has been decreasing for 12 days, Dr Salomon said.

39,181 people have been able to leave hospital to go home, 1,171 more than the day before.

There are 158,050 registered positive cases of Covid-19 in France, says the health agency Santé Publique France.

In the world, over 2.5million cases have been registered and 174,000 have died, reports Agence France Presse.

Some European countries such as Germany and Denmark are now beginning progressive deconfinement measures. All shops smaller than 800 square metres have reopened and schools will reopen on May 4 in Germany. However measures of social distancing are still strongly in place and bars and restaurants remain closed.
