DNA spray could protect jewellers
Côte d'Azur shops look at anti-theft system after spate of attacks
JEWELLERS in Nice are looking at fitting a DNA spray security system to cut down on a rash of attacks this year that has recently seen one raider shot dead and millions of euros of jewellery stolen.
The system releases a harmless vapour containing DNA that clings to the raider’s skin and clothing for up to six months, even after washing. It would make identifying thieves easier.
It was hailed at a meeting of around 70 Côte d'Azur jewellers who met at the weekend to discuss security measures after the most recent raid where one shopkeeper killed a raider in the street.
Members of the Côte d'Azur jewellers’ federation were very interested in the DNA spray system as it had been used in the UK.
They are also looking at other measures such as automatic fog machines that fill the shop with a dense visually impenetrable cloud of fog, electronic links to the police and extra police patrols near their premises.
