Drivers warned of traffic jams

Heavy traffic expected as schools close for summer holiday and tens of thousands head for the sun

DRIVERS have been warned of difficult driving conditions and heavy congestion on main roads this weekend with the start of the school holidays.

Traffic monitoring agency Bison Futé has classified today and tomorrow both “red” in Ile-de-France and “orange” across the rest of the country with very heavy traffic expected out of main cities towards the coasts.

Extra police have been drafted in, with 13,000 police and gendarmes on duty and many assigned to speed checks and watching for motorists driving carelessly or driving with excess alcohol.

Bison Futé’s warning for today covers the main exits from Paris and Ile-de-France, with drivers warned not to attempt to cross the capital towards the east due to roadworks in the tunnel under the Marne. They should also avoid the A6 (where there are roadworks south of Evry and at Villabé), A10 and N118 heading south.

Tomorrow, Saturday is similar with drivers warned to expect difficulties on main roads out of Ile-de-France and on major north-south southbound.

Sunday will see traffic easing, but there could still be problems leaving Paris and on the A7 between Valence and Orange.
