Low-cost carrier easyJet is expected to “consolidate” its presence in Bordeaux next summer, following the 2024 closure of the Toulouse hub.
The airline’s deputy managing director in France, Reginald Otten, told Sud Ouest that in spite of the closure easyJet had retained all employees in addition to its 36 aircraft spread across six main French bases: Paris Orly, Paris Charles de Gaulle, Lyon, Nice, Bordeaux and Nantes.
“We remain very present in the south-west,” said Mr Otten. “We have redistributed the Toulouse-based planes to other regional bases such as Nantes and Lyon, and we are consolidating Bordeaux, where we are number one, a position that was reinforced with the departure of Ryanair last year”.
Details surrounding the potential expansion of flight routes or other methods of consolidation are yet to be announced.
EasyJet’s Bordeaux base currently serves four UK destinations: Bristol, Edinburgh, London, and Manchester.
Minimal market growth in France
EasyJet’s traffic in France has gradually returned to roughly the same as pre-Covid levels – however, growth has been minimal due to the country's “fiscal context”.
The rise in airline taxes at the start of the year has seen several carriers cautious in their approach to new routes.
The impact of these increasing costs could particularly affect smaller regional airports that rely on flights from low-cost carriers.
“We are currently reviewing the network slightly to adapt it and reflect the reality in France today, which is a costly environment,” stated Mr Otten.
EasyJet has so far announced the launch of three new France-UK routes in the spring/summer 2026 season (from Paris CDG, Montpellier and Nice), taking the total number of connections it flies between the countries to 50.
