France TV warned on Sochi comments

Winter Olympics commentators censured over sexist comments during ice skating competition

FRANCE TV has been warned about sexist comments made by two of its commentators during the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

TV watchdog conseil supérieur de l'audiovisuel (CSA) censured the broadcaster over comments made by former ice skater Philippe Candeloro and fellow commentator Nelson Montfort.

In its ruling, the CSA said it "found that statements made by these commentators, their content and their gritty nature relating in particular to the physical aspect of sports were likely to reflect gender bias.”

One comment that caused complaint came when Mr Candeloro said: "I know more than one snake that would like to bother the Canadian Cleopatra."

Another off-the-cuff quip that sparked anger was: "She has a lot of charm, Valentina, a bit like Monica Bellucci. Maybe a little less chest, but good."

The CSA said it was disappointed that France Televisions management had “maintained an attitude of denial”.

The CSA said that public broadcasters must be “exemplary in promoting the image and role of women”.

The broadcaster’s director of sport, Bilalian Daniel, had earlier tried to defend the duo, saying: “Sport is a moment of entertainment, there are excesses of enthusiasm, and joie de vivre.

“I do not see how political correctness should prevail in this area.”

Mr Montfort denied accusations of sexism, saying: "I am married with two daughters. Saying that I'm sexist is so ridiculous and far from the truth that I can not answer."

France Televisions was more contrite in its response to the ruling. It told AFP, “the athletic department was informed of the deliberations of the CSA and will take its warning into account”.
