President Sarkozy has said the government is studying the possibility of subsidising the rollout of the “Linky”, at an estimated cost of between €120 and €240 per unit.
If the project is agreed, the state will aim to place the Linky in 95 per cent of French households -- 35 million homes -- by 2018.
The Linky is currently on trial at homes in the Indre-et-Loire and Lyon.
