Fréjus is France's top growth town
New demographic study finds 21 of the 25 fastest-growing towns are in the south, with Fréjus in the Var coming top
FRÉJUS has emerged as the most popular town in France to move to, outpacing everywhere else for population growth, a new study has found.
Demographers examining the growth of France's biggest towns found the Var town and its neighbour Saint-Raphaël had seen their population increase by 71.7 per cent since 1975, to today's level of 92,000.
The next biggest growth areas were Annemasse in the Haute-Savoie, Arcachon in the Gironde and Toulouse, which all recorded population growth in the region of 50-55 per cent over the same period.
The research, by demographers Jean-François Dumont and Laurent Chalard, is published this week in specialist journal Population et Avenir.
More than two thirds of the 117 big towns studied - all with more than 50,000 inhabitants - have seen their population grow since 1975.
Of the 25 fastest-growing towns, 21 are in the south of France.
Other growth areas include Toulon, Narbonne, Perpignan, Ajaccio, Toulouse, Bordeaux, Nice and Montpellier.
The most popular town in the north was Vannes, in the Morbihan, up 36.9 per cent to 63,000.
