Have you registered to vote in UK general election?
TIME is running out to register to vote in the British general election on June 8 so, if you are eligible, it is vital to do so as soon as possible.
As the government has not yet acted on its manifesto promise to end the 15-year limit on expat voting, only Britons who have been out of the UK for a shorter period than that will be eligible.
Register at https://www.gov.uk/register-to-vote
To be registered, you must also be aged 18 or more and have been a registered voter in the UK before leaving or if you were too young when your family left, then a parent or guardian should have been registered.
The deadline to register to vote is Monday May 22, but you should not leave it until then, especially if you live in France and are planning to vote by post. If in doubt as to whether or not there is time for your council to register you and send a postal ballot and for you to return it by 10pm on Thursday June 8, it is recommended you apply for a proxy vote instead.
If you took part in the referendum you may still be registered, but you should contact your former UK council to check this is the case and that your chosen voting method is still in place.
More information about voting by post or proxy can be found at: www.yourvotematters.co.uk/how-do-i-vote
Contact details of councils can be found at www.yourvotematters.co.uk/register-to-vote/find-your-local-authority by entering the postcode of your last UK address.
