Hermione to visit port of Nice
The Hermione, one of the world’s largest wooden sailing ships, is anchoring all day at Nice tomorrow (Wednesday April 25).
Those wanting to see the replica 18th century frigate arrive are invited to visit the port of Nice from 8.45 at Quai Riboty and there will be activities on the quayside all afternoon from 14.00.
Entertainment will include a hip hop show and juggling performances by artists who won prizes at the Jeux de la Francophonie, music from the sapeurs-pompiers, artistic fencing, and a talk about sailing vocabulary in French creole languages.
The stop at Nice is part of the Hermione’s second major voyage after her 2015 trip to America, which recreated the voyage of the original Hermione, when La Fayette went to help the Americans in the War of Independence.
This year sees the replica frigate cruising the Mediterranean, with remaining stops including Bastia, Corsica from April 27-29; Portimão in Portugal from May 8-10; Pasaia, Spain from May 18-21; and Bordeaux from June 10-13 before the ship returns home to Rochefort, Charente-Maritime, where it was built and is based, on the morning of June 17.
The trip is in partnership with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, and many young French-speakers from different countries are on board the ship as voluntary crew members.
For more about the voyage and stops see this link. Guided tours on board at Nice are now fully booked, however it is still possible to visit at some later stops and from June 17 in Rochefort.
