Hot weather to return: French weekly weather forecast June 16 - 20

Highs of 36C are expected in the south-west and over 30C in Brittany by the end of the week

Heatwave warnings are likely to be raised before the end of the week

An Atlantic anticyclone will bring calm and hot weather to France for the week following severe storms over the weekend

A small amount of rain in the south-east on Monday is possible – as storms in the Mediterranean and Italy potentially brush France – and in the Pyrénées and Alps at the end of the week. Other than this, no rain is forecast.

The national average temperature will rise steadily to reach a peak at the end of the week where it will be close to 5C higher than average. Highs of 36C are possible in the south-west.

The peak of the hot weather will be from Wednesday to Friday.

Heatwave warnings are likely to come into force at the end of the week or over the weekend, after day- and night-time temperatures have reached high enough levels for a certain number of days

Monday June 16

The week will start off sunny in central and southern France, with cloud coverage north of the Loire.

Temperatures of around 20C in coastal Normandy and Brittany – the coolest of the week – quickly reach around 25C inland around Paris, Rennes, and Lille.

Central and eastern France will see temperatures of around 25C throughout the day, rising to 27C in the south-west, with the Mediterranean reaching around 31C.

Tuesday June 17

Sunny skies are forecast across France on Tuesday, with only a hint of wispy clouds north of Paris and in Normandy.

Temperatures will rise by around 2C compared to those on Monday, reaching around 27C in the north and centre of France and 33C in the south along the Mediterranean.

Early morning temperatures in the south are likely to hover around 20C, signalling that warm overnight temperatures are set to start increasing in the area.

Wednesday June 18

A scorching sun will cover all of France, although it may be cloudy in parts of the Alps in the afternoon.

Temperatures will rise once more, with highs of 28C in the north, as the hottest period of the week begins.

In the south-west, highs of 35C are possible, and if not hit on Wednesday are almost certain by the end of the week.

Thursday June 19

Conditions will be similar on Thursday, with plentiful sun and temperatures rising ever so slightly higher than on Wednesday.

The south-west, centre of France (up to the Pays de la Loire) and the Rhône Valley will be the warmest areas, all seeing temperatures of around 33C - 36C.

Elsewhere, highs of 30C or more are likely everywhere except areas on the Belgium and German borders, which should regardless reach around 28C.

Friday June 20

Friday is set to be the hottest day of the week with an average national temperature of 24.5C (compared to Thursday’s 24.4C) and conditions will be nearly identical.

Notably, Brittany may see highs of 32C in inland areas, compensating for any lower temperatures elsewhere.

Forecasters predict that Thursday and Friday will be the warmest days of the coming weeks, with temperatures set to drop slowly the following week although remaining above average for the season.

A risk of significant rain is unlikely over this warmer period, which may exacerbate drought conditions in the north and east of France, where some warnings are already in place
