Can I switch from pink paper driving licence to French plastic one?
All licences must be converted to modern format by 2033
Reader Question: I want to updated my old paper licence because I am worried it will get damaged, but do not want to wait so long. Is it possible to update it whenever I want?
France’s pink paper driving licences do eventually need to be renewed for the modern plastic versions, although the deadline for this is not until January 19, 2033.
Up until this date, the paper version (the pink ‘3 volets’ style, technically made of cardboard) of France’s driving licence will be accepted.
Interestingly, these paper versions can also be digitised through the France Identité app by French citizens.
Drivers in possession of a paper licence can update the document before this cut off if they wish to, however, and must do so in the event that it is stolen, lost, or damaged.
In all these cases, the new version of the licence will come in a plastic format.
Previously this request was the only way to request a modern plastic version, but ANTS (Agence nationale des titres sécurisés) now accepts simple modernisation demands.
Online application
The request is made through the ANTS (also called France Titres) website, via this link. You will need to log in or register to your ANTS account, but will also be able to log in via your FranceConnect information.
It is free except for the cost of providing valid photo identification (you may need to pay for a professional e-photo or otherwise take a passport-style photo).
Drivers will need to provide:
Proof of identity
Proof of address
A digital photo and signature. You can also submiy If you prefer to submit a paper passport-style photo if you prefer, by uploading it during the application process
Your current driving licence (only proof of it, you will not need to hand it in until receiving your new licence)
The medical opinion form Cerfa No. 14880 if renewal is subject to a medical review or for certain licence categories
