July road deaths hit new low

But motorcyclists reminded to wear protective clothing even in summer as accidents rise

ROAD deaths in July hit their lowest level since 1948, but behind the figure is an increase in injuries and motorcycle deaths.

A total of 345 people died on the road during July, down 5.7% on the previous year and described as “a notable drop” by la Sécurité routière.

However the number of injured people admitted to hospital has risen by 14.9% compared with 2012.

Motorcyclist deaths have risen 19.3% compared to June and July last year.

A statement from la Sécurité routière. said: “It is necessary for motorcyclists to always have the right equipment, in spite of the hot weather, and car drivers should take extra care in regard of these road users, who are particularly vulnerable.”
