MPs debate cancelling Brexit as petition passes 6M

British MPs will today hold a debate on cancelling Brexit - technically known as revoking article 50 - as a petition on the topic has gained more than six million signatures from British people and UK residents.

The debate will - as usual for debates following petitions to the UK parliament and government - be held in a side chamber, Westminster Hall, not the main House of Commons chamber, and the debate is being combined with ones for two other petitions.

Usually these Westminster Hall debates do not lead to a vote; however this afternoon's debate comes just before the MPs are set to once again cast 'indicative votes' for their preferred way forward in the current Brexit impasse. Voting on the latter is expected in the main chamber around 21.00 French time.

The other petitions, which also obtained the right to a debate as they gained more than 100,000 signatures, are one to hold a referendum on leaving with the deal or cancelling Brexit, and one that said the UK should leave with or without a deal on March 29, 2019.

It is possible to watch the debate at parliamentlive.tv and on YouTube from 17.30 (French time) today.
