A new traffic information app will soon be available for drivers on the AP-7 motorway connecting France (Pyrénées-Orientales) and Spain (Barcelona).
The Catalan road service Servei Català de Trànsit (SCT) created the idea of the app to trigger geolocated voice alerts concerning traffic updates, road accidents, and emergencies such as flooding. Drivers can then change their route to avoid causing further congestion.
While the SCT outlined to local media outlet El Periódico that “it will be necessary to download the app” if travelling on the road, no official rules have been issued stating that installation is compulsory to drive along the AP-7. However, it is implied that road users will be encouraged to make use of the digital service.
"We have had an ongoing partnership with Google Maps and also met with [GPS platform] Waze to integrate virtual signs with official voice messages announcing motorway closures, but this project did not go ahead. That is why we are developing our own application," Ramon Lamiel, Director of the SCT, told El Periódico.
The Catalan media also reported that the system will initially focus on the AP-7 motorway due to the increase of accidents (from 33 in 2023 to 66 in 2024), particularly involving HGVs and lorries.
Launching December 2026
The app is set to begin development in the new year and should be available for road users by December 2026.
Full details are yet to be released.
