No-deal French carte de sejour website still open
CONNEXION has asked the Interior Ministry what British residents should do concerning cartes de séjour applications with Brexit deferred to January 31 – potentially longer, or even cancelled, if opposition parties win the general election.
The ministry says the only information it can provide is that the new website (tinyurl.com/tfbnucu) will remain open to apply for “no-deal” cards if people wish to make use of it, and those Britons who wish to do so may still apply for EU citizens’ cards.
Applications for these are still being processed by prefectures.
This is despite Connexion receiving reader feedback that some prefectures are no longer processing cards or giving appointments to do so.
The ministry is not giving any information about what would happen in the event of Brexit with a deal. It is expected that Britons would be asked to apply for a new kind of card within six months of the end of the transition period.
While Britons remain EU citizens, they have a right to an EU citizen’s card, which would be to their benefit in the case of Brexit, especially if it is of the séjour permanent kind for someone legally resident for more than five years.
Dossiers submitted through the no-deal website will only be transmitted to prefectures for processing if the UK leaves without a deal.
