The prefecture in southeast France has reminded residents of rules and potential sanctions following two recent forest fires in the Hautes-Alpes region.
The first fire broke out in Guillestre on April 8, spreading across a very steep area. According to firefighters, 50 personnel were mobilised to bring it under control after it burned 800 m².
A second fire also occurred on April 8, this time in Villard-Saint-Pancrace. It required the mobilisation of 20 firefighters and burned 4,000 m² of land, additionally damaging a trailer.
These incidents prompted the Hautes-Alpes prefecture to issue a warning and remind residents of the applicable regulations.
“An uncontrolled fire can have serious consequences. Let’s remain vigilant,” the prefecture stated.
In a Facebook post, authorities reiterated that burning green waste is prohibited unless a specific authorisation has been obtained in advance from the local town hall.
Burning green waste without authorisation can be punished by a fine up to €750.
While controlled burning to clear land for grazing is permitted, it is strictly regulated. Residents must notify the fire department by calling 18 or 112 on the same day.
Burning is only allowed between 10am and 3pm, and only under suitable conditions: in the absence of wind and with constant supervision. Fire extinguishing equipment must be kept nearby, and the fire must be completely extinguished before leaving the site.
Failure to comply is punishable by a €135 fine, with the possibility of prosecution if a fire occurs.
