Protesters smash 100,000 eggs
Low prices mean farmers cannot cover their costs, say Breton producers, as they throw eggs in front of tax office
PROTESTERS have smashed 100,000 eggs in front of a tax office, claiming that their low prices are not enough to cover the costs of producing them.
The protesters threw the eggs off the back of a lorry outside the tax office in Carhaix, Finistère.
They say they will continue to smash 5% of daily production in Brittany every day to reduce production and raise prices and demand the government take action to reduce national production by the same amount.
Producers say the low price of eggs are also preventing them from making investments to improve the welfare of chickens in line with European legislation that came into force at the beginning of 2012.
