A malfunctioning speed camera in south-eastern France flashed every passing motorist for nearly two days, even though they were complying with the speed limit.
The camera, located on the N7 between Bourg-lès-Valence and Pont-de-l'Isère in the Drôme region, began triggering for all vehicles, including those travelling well below the 80 km/h limit.
The issue began on Monday morning shortly before 08:00, following a maintenance intervention carried out by a technician. Motorists quickly noticed that the fixed camera was flashing continuously, even at speeds of around 70 km/h.
“All the cars in front of me were flashed even though we were only going 70 km/h. Then, when I looked in my rear-view mirror, everyone behind me was getting flashed too. A lot of us are going to receive unjustified fines,” said Cathy, a local resident who uses the road daily to commute to work, reports Ici Drôme Ardèche.
After being alerted by local media, the prefecture confirmed that the fault had been resolved by 16:00 on Tuesday, and that the camera had returned to normal operation.
Authorities also reassured drivers that no fines would be issued as a result of the malfunction.
France’s most heavily used speed camera is located in the French Riviera, flashing approximately 170,000 vehicles per year.
