Red light radars being installed
Drivers who run lights will be fined €135 after being caught on radar cameras being installed nationwide this year.
TRAFFIC light radars are to be installed to catch drivers who run red lights.
Offenders will face fines of €135 and they will lose four penalty points from their licences.
Four radars will be installed in Paris, Lyon and Bordeaux over the next two months, with 150 to be sited across France this year.
The machines will take two pictures – one at the red light and another in the middle of the junction.
There have already been complaints from drivers who fear they will be caught for driving through just as the light changes from orange to red (legally permitted if it is not safe for you to stop).
Sécurité Routière official Michelle Merli said that the orange light could be made to flash alongside the green one for several seconds before switching to the red stop light, to avoid this problem.
Authorities say that the 2,327 automatic radar cameras already in operation in France – on motorways and major routes – have saved 12,000 lives since 2003.
