Safety advice during storms
Government warns of further weather disruption and gives useful information on how to keep safe
WITH the continuing threat of violent thunderstorms endangering lives and causing damage across the country, the government has issued safety advice on what to do if there are storms, heavy rain or a flooding risk:
Do not go out to pick up your children from school – they will be looked after by school staff or rescue services
Keep away from the seashore, lakesides or river banks – do not continue outside activities, especially near trees, and get inside somewhere safe
Never touch fallen power cables
Electric generators should not be used inside a building and should be put outside
Bring inside any objects that are likely to be blown about by winds
Help old or infirm neighbours and keep them informed on what is happening, weather updates etc
Make sure you know what to do in case of flooding or roof damage
Regularly check weather updates from Météo France
Do not close ventilation vents in your house
Close all doors and shutters
Unplug all electrical appliances and televisions
Avoid using landline telephones in a thunderstorm
On the road - park somewhere safe and away from trees and stay in the car
Avoid back roads in heavy rains and possible flooding
Never try to drive or walk through a flood if you are not certain of the depth
