Second black box found on sea bed

Investigators hope both boxes from Rio-Paris AF477 will yield answers as to why the aircraft crashed

A SECOND black box, containing the cockpit voice recordings, has been recovered from the wreckage of flight AF 477, some 3,900m below sea level.

Crash investigators have now recovered both voice and data recorders from the Rio to Paris flight which crashed on June 1, four hours after take-off.

The boxes were found during a fourth search mission and could yield more details on why the Airbus A330 crashed, killing all 228 people on board.

The cost of recovering the boxes is about €35m and both boxes have been described as being in a good state.

The director of the Bureau d'Enquêtes et d'Analyses, Jean-Paul Troadec, told Le Figaro: "If we can read the two recorders we will understand what happened."

The boxes will be transferred to Paris to be examined by the BEA in the presence of French police officers.

Investigators have already implicated the aircraft's speed sensors as a cause in the crash, which occurred after the Airbus hit heavy turbulence over the Atlantic.
