Semaine du Goût helps good taste

As chefs visit schools this week to promote different kinds of food to children, restaurants have special offers.

THREE thousand food professionals will visit 6,000 primary school classes this week for the Semaine du Goût, a national event aimed at waking up kids’ taste-buds and nurturing a love of good food.

Chefs, bakers, butchers, cheesemakers and farmers will be among those meeting children in CM1 and CM2 in the Ministry of Agriculture-sponsored event. They will offer cookery lessons, talks and tastings.

At least 700 ateliers du goût - attractions like producers' markets, open days and food festivals - will also be on offer during the week, which is in its 19th year.

About 500 gourmet restaurants will offer special menus at prices from €20 - €60 including wine.

After the success of last year “Afterwork du Goût” will be repeated. This is described as “a culinary experience at the end of the working day” - from 18.00-20.00.

The Hôtel Fouquet's in Paris is hosting the evening, which includes demonstrations by non-French chefs cooking variations on classic French dishes. Also during the week, (October 13-19) is an awards ceremony, Talents du Goût, which rewards innovative people who have made significant contributions to France's food heritage.

The overall aim of the week is better public education about food choices and healthy eating.
