SNCF announces fake TGV disaster
Announcement of explosion killing 102 passengers was part of an internal exercise and stayed online for almost an hour
THE SNCF has mistakenly announced a massive explosion on a TGV train, killing 102 people and injuring hundreds.
The dramatic announcement was posted on the rail operator's website at about 11.00 yesterday morning informing passengers and journalists of the disaster.
It said the estimated death toll from the explosion near Mâcon was 102, with 380 passengers injured and a special helpline had been set up for friends and relatives.
Journalists flooded the SNCF press office with calls - until an hour later, the rail operator issued a clarification.
The accident had never happened - it was part of an internal drill to prepare staff for what would happen in the event of an actual disaster.
A spokesman said the company carried out regular crisis management exercises - but this one went too far.
He said no worried members of the public had called during the period when the false announcement was online.
