Speeding driver watching DVDs
A speeding driver was watching DVDs on a portable screen set up on his dashboard when he was stopped doing 190 km/h.
A driver was caught speeding at 190 km/h – while watching DVDs in his car.
The 21-year-old, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was banned from driving for a year, had his car confiscated and was fined €150.
He will also have to complete a citizenship course before he is allowed to take the wheel again.
In his defence, he told Tours criminal court: “I had no idea that watching DVDs while driving was against the law.”
The court heard the driver, of Pakistani origin and from Franconville in Val-d’Oise, had been watching Asian music videos on a portable screen set up on the dashboard.
He was stopped in his BMW on the A10 motorway near Tours after being clocked driving at 190 km/h.
The speed limit on that section of the motorway is 110 km/h.
He admitted speeding, as well as a further charge of driving “in a manner not conducive to being able to manoeuvre properly”.
Tours Prosecutor Philippe Varin said: “A speeding charge is insufficient on its own to reflect the serious nature of the offence.
“The court has therefore decided to take a necessarily severe and symbolic judgment.”
