Temperature dips to freezing in part of France
After the summer highs in June and July, now weather stations are recording lows in August...
The heatwaves of June and July now appear to be just a distant memory - particularly in one part of eastern France, where the mercury edged towards winter temperatures this week.
A Météo France weather station in Mouthe, near the Swiss border in the Jura mountains, registered a temperature of just 1C on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, in nearby Chapelle-des-Bois, temperatures dropped as low as -0.4C, according to the village's Twitter account - which added a spot of useful winter advice.
According to meteorologist François Jobard, sub-zero temperatures are not uncommon in the region in August.
Mouthe is sometimes known as La Petite Sibérie. January average temperatures are between -6C and -10C, and it is where France's record low temperature of -41.2C was measured in January 1985. The record low in the mountainous commune for August is -4.5C.
