Thousands protest against TGV line

Demonstrators call for immediate halt to planned high-speed rail line running through France from Paris to Madrid

ABOUT 15,000 people have joined a demonstration to protest against plans for a new high-speed rail line linking France and Spain.

Protestors took to the streets of the border town of Hendaye yesterday demanding an immediate stop to the TGV project.

French and Spanish authorities have worked together on the proposed high-speed line from Paris to Madrid, which will link the two cities in about six and a half hours.

The route was unveiled earlier this month, passing through the Lot-et-Garonne, Gironde, Landes and Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

According to France Info, about 100 French politicians joined the march including Green MP Noël Mamère and Marie Bové, daughter of former presidential candidate José Bové.

The demonstration coincided with another anti-TGV protest in the Italian border town of Suse, which is on the route of a proposed new high-speed service linking Lyon and Turin.
