Winter respiratory infections are rising sharply across France, with flu circulation increasing in every age group, according to the latest weekly bulletin from the state health authority Santé publique France.
General practitioners report an estimated 191 consultations for acute respiratory infection (IRA) per 100,000 inhabitants between November 24 to 30.
This category covers flu, Covid-19, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) and other viruses and has risen from 160 the previous week, with Brittany, Nouvelle-Aquitaine and Grand Est reporting the highest regional rates.
Most mainland regions are now in pre epidemic (or higher) phase for winter respiratory infections, with Corsica the only exception.
Flu activity is also rising quickly with 119 consultations per 100,000 inhabitants up from 89 the previous week. Emergency departments also reported steep rises in flu-related attendances and hospitalisations.
Other seasonal viruses are also active.
RSV infections are increasing both in the community and in hospitals, with laboratory detections rising across age groups.
Syndromic indicators for bronchiolitis are up and close to levels seen last year, while hospital and community Covid-19 indicators remain stable and low.
The national flu and Covid-19 vaccination campaign began on October 14, targeting over-65s, people at higher risk of severe illness, pregnant women, care-home residents and those who live with or regularly visit vulnerable individuals. Newborn immunisation against RSV is also under way.
Health authorities continue to advise mask-wearing in case of symptoms, handwashing and regular ventilation of homes.
