Wood you believe it? A 2CV made of wood!
A retired cabinet-maker has created a world first; a 2CV with the bodywork made of wood and which is, bar paperwork and finishing touches, ready to be driven on the open road.
Michel Robillard, from Sennevières, Indre-et-Loire, started work on the 1953 2CV six years ago. He uses wood from local fruit trees, telling Connexion: “The wings are walnut, pear and apple for the main structure and cherry for the boot and doors. Each has its own aroma and its characteristics and, although difficult to work with, they are noble woods. The colour combinations give the finish a certain charm.”
His work is meticulous: “The first six months were research, to make coachwork moulds. I am proud of the result. Nearly every day people come to see the car and I feel it is a work of art.”
The car has a Dyane engine and he must get the electrics checked before it gets approval for road use and a planned tour round France.
Since passing his CAP diploma at 14 he has worked with wood for 50 years and made models as a hobby in 1990. They take 500-600 hours and his model museum (www.maquettesbois.fr – call for details) has a Bugatti Royale, Harley-Davidson police bike and others.
His 2CV is ecological as “many cars used to be made partially out of wood. Once varnished it will withstand all weathers, just as a boat does”.
But he admits: “You have to be a little mad to make one and yes, perhaps I am a little mad.”
