Background checks on volunteers in France
Are there any background checks on parents who want to accompany school trips? H.P.
Criminal record (casier judiciaire) checks of the bulletin 2 type are systematically supplied to local authorities in the case of applicants for certain jobs involving habitual contact with minors.
This check shows most kinds of criminal convictions, with a few minor exceptions.
However, as accompanying volunteers are not employees, this arrangement does not apply, either to volunteers who accompany school trips or for those helping with the organisation and running of a school or any extra-curricular activities.
Having said that, a school head is entitled to ask volunteers who have contact with children to supply the bulletin 3.
This is a criminal record check that shows the most serious offences, notably those which resulted in a two-year sentence or more, unsuspended, or judicial bans on working or volunteering in activities where regular contact with children is implied.
