Covid-19 confinement in France and bike riding
Reader question: The restriction on exercise is one hour/within 1km. This is fine if you take exercise on foot but I habitually exercise alone on a bike.
The one hour restriction is OK but the 1km restriction from your home makes sensible exercise difficult as staying within 1km effectively limits exercise to about 10 minutes maximum. Is there any flexibility?
This is what the official government Covid-19 information states:
Cycling is allowed as a means of travel to work or to do essential shopping.
However, it is prohibited in the context of leisure and individual physical activity with the exception of walks to take some air with children, where it is tolerated for children to ride a bicycle or scooter, if the accompanying adult is on foot.
We believe the aim of this is to limit the potential of any accidents which may weigh on the already heavily used medical services, although this is not officially stated.
We believe it is the same reason why people should not go off rambling in remote areas at the moment, for example, even though the risk of crossing other people is limited there is potential for accidents which may require medical assistance and this is required elsewhere at the moment.
