Road fatalities in France continue to rise above 2024 levels, with November 2025 seeing four more deaths than the year before.

There were 270 road fatalities across mainland France across the month, compared to 266 in 2024 – a 2% increase and the deadliest November since 2017.

Figures also reveal that 1,213 people were seriously injured in road accidents last month.

In particular, the number of pedestrian fatalities increased by eight compared to in 2024, with deaths of young people (under 24) also rising.

“The majority of accidents are linked to a breach of the Code de la Route,” said inter-ministerial delegate for road safety Estelle Balit.

This includes “the consumption of substances incompatible with driving,” she added.

“This is particularly the case with nitrous oxide [protoxyde d’azote in French], the inhalation of which, beyond the harmful effects on health, is synonymous with loss of self-control, and therefore of one's vehicle,” she added.

The start of the year saw significantly fewer deaths than in 2024 however April saw an increase in deaths, and August 2025 was the deadliest since July 2017 in France for road fatalities.
