Reader experience: Buying a used car with French hand holding service
Peter Buckley knew what he wanted from a second-hand car but needed expert help to find it, check it and buy it. He shares his review of a support service in France
Peter Buckley moved to France in 2020 and enlisted the help of an expert when looking to buy a second-hand car.
He wanted to buy a reliable German model and, fortunately for him, a specialist in importing German cars, Paul Cépède of Deutsch Marques Automobiles, is based not far from him in Saône-et-Loire, eastern France.

Mr Buckley said he provided an excellent and patient service, and helped him purchase his Volkswagen, which he remains happy with.
“He was extremely professional and took the time to fully understand my requirements. It is right up there with the best car-buying experience I have ever had.
I was very specific about what I wanted. After a lot of looking together, I eventually found an advert for one I liked and he visited to check it was OK.”
The garage usually charges €300 to look at a car (from France or Germany), which includes inspecting its mechanics, interior and bodywork, checking its paperwork, negotiating the price, and help registering the vehicle.
“If you are looking for a second-hand car, whether imported from Germany or already in France, I recommend doing this.
The person I used speaks English, German and French, and the vehicle comes with full provenance, double-checked by him.
They can also collect your car and help with admin.”
