Covid rules France: How many friends can come for Christmas?

Reader question: How many people can I invite over for a meal on Christmas day? I usually have my two daughters and their partners

France's Prime Minister Jean Castex has recommended that a maximum of six adults (children not included) gather to eat a Christmas meal together.

He said this number takes into consideration the recommendations put in place by other European countries.

He made this announcement on December 3 during a press conference outlining France's Covid vaccine strategy.

Further recommendations may be made in the lead up to Christmas.

Mr Castex has previously said that these "moments of festive and friendly gatherings, where one lowers one's guard… are particularly risky".

If Covid-related health objectives are met, France will move out of lockdown on December 15. This will be replaced by a 21:00 to 07:00 curfew.

The curfew will not apply on December 24 or December 31.

So, if you are hosting a dinner party on December 25, all of your guests will have to be home before curfew at 21:00.

Mr Macron has asked people gathering at Christmas to respect barrier gestures and wear masks in their houses if they have guests.

If France’s lockdown is dropped on December 15, it will be possible for family members abroad to visit.
