Court ruling means nine out of 10 households in France are set to receive an extra electricity bill to cover costs from 2012
FRANCE’S highest administrative court has officially overturned the 2% limit on electricity prices set by the government in 2012.
As a result of the Conseil D’Etat’s ruling, nine in 10 households (more than 28 million) are expected to receive an additional electricity bill of up to €40 from EDF to cover the shortfall of 2012/13.
The Conseil D’Etat has requested that the government makes a decision "within two months" to retroactively increase electricity prices.
It ruled that the 2% limit was not enough to cover costs on "blue" and "yellow" tariffs.
But it said that the limit was "not manifestly inadequate for users on the "green" tariff.
As reported earlier this month, the Conseil D’Etat’s ruling follows a recommendation from the public rapporteur that said the limit set by former Prime Minister Jean-Marc Ayrault was not enough to cover EDF’s costs in 2012.
