Can I get a new EHIC card?

Ours has expired - do we need to pay for private health insurance instead?

MY partner and I moved to France in 2008 and our Cartes Vitale have run out. I will not get my UK state pension until May 2012 and we believe that we will have to look at taking out private health insurance to give us cover here.
Your February article on the EHIC [European Health Insurance Card] and residence in France said UK state pensioners need British versions of the EHIC, not French. Where does that leave us, as we are not state pensioners? Can we get a British or French EHIC?

Unfortunately, you fall between two stools, as you are not entitled
to an EHIC in the UK or France.

You are not receiving UK benefits or state pension, so the new EU rules on needing a British version of the EHIC do not apply to you, as you are living in France.

As you are no longer entitled to French healthcare under your Carte Vitale, you need to pay for private healthcare insurance.

This private insurance to cover your healthcare needs in France will generally cover you for foreign travel, but you should check this.
