After a highly criticised slow start, France’s vaccination campaign has accelerated and now compares favourably with the UK, US, and the rest of the EU. We take a closer look.

As of September 2, 2021, figures show that 72.70% of the total population in France have received at least one injection (3,881,216 still waiting for their second dose), and 66.92% are fully vaccinated (44,877,194 people, all doses received).

Of the eligible population only (over 12s and people without medical conditions that mean they cannot receive the vaccination), this rises to 84.58% who have so far had one dose (3,873,314), and 77.86% who are now fully vaccinated (44,867,859).

Vaccination in France is continuing, with numbers boosted especially after President Emmanuel Macron announced the extension of the health pass requirement on July 12.

The rate is slowing, however. Over the past seven days, 101,347 first injections were given every day on average, which represents just 27% of the maximum rate seen in France, which peaked at 372,732 per day on July 30.

Vaccination rates across much of the country are at between 54-72% and more, depending on the department. The Covid tracker website CovidTracker.fr has an interactive map on which you can check the vaccination rates by department.
