Artists brew up new concept: beer painting

Beer bottles are dipped in paint by Nantes duo and used to create portraits

Two young artists from Nantes have put the pint into painting by inventing ‘beer painting’ – portraits created using only beer bottles.

Their concept has taken off, with a successful exhibition in their home city leading to further shows in Lyon and Barcelona. The duo, who call themselves Naart, stumbled upon the portrait-painting gimmick after a ‘long night’, which presumably involved emptying a few bottles in the first place.

The necks of the beer bottles are dipped in paint and used instead of brushes to create the portraits.

The hip-hop loving pair initially chose subjects such as rappers (Tupac, Snoop Dogg) and cartoon characters (The Joker, Bart Simpson) but now fans of their work can make suggestions for future portrait subjects via the Naart Facebook page.

A recent addition was a portrayal of Serge Gainsbourg who, one might presume, would have wholeheartedly appreciated his own booze-based depiction.

You can view their beer paintings at the Les Fleurs Du Malt Le Bar "La Mise en Bières" in Lyon from April 14 to April 28.
