French eye care system: readers’ experiences
Two readers have a differing opinion of the system
One reader who needed urgent care says service was excellent

To the Editor,
I am sure there are a wide range of experiences when it comes to eye care in France: I cannot fault the system.
While on holiday a couple of years ago outside of France I self-diagnosed a possible serious eye issue.
Risky, I know, but I made an online appointment with an ophthalmologist for several days after my return.
My diagnosis was unfortunately confirmed and I was immediately referred to a specialist who provided a second verification.
Within days I was receiving treatment at the hospital (all within a week of returning to France).
The entire hospital visit (drugs, specialist and other staff) was fully funded by the French system and the top-up for the specialist’s initial examination was covered by my mutuelle.
My experience with the Australian and Canadian health system tells me that I would have been lucky to even get an appointment with a specialist in that timeframe.
I continue to receive excellent care for my ongoing condition.
As an aside, basic glasses (frames and lenses) are covered by the French health system with tests available every second year. That is a pretty good deal in my opinion.

To the Editor,
I live in rural France and have ocular myasthenia gravis.
I have lost all confidence in the eyecare system in France – even the main eye hospital in Montauban (Tarn-et-Garonne) has been unable to help me with my prism lenses.
I have no choice but to pay to go privately at Moorfields Eye Hospital in London.
The whole system regarding eyes is very hard in France and so much easier in the UK – and a lot cheaper.
