52 new Michelin star restaurants in France - is there one near you?

A record 52 restaurants have been granted a Michelin ‘star’ for the first time in the 2024 version of the famous Michelin guide for France, which was announced yesterday (March 18) at a star-studded awards show.

The full list was revealed during a ceremony in Tours (Indre-et-Loire) with hundreds of chefs in attendance.

In total 62 restaurants in France have been given a new star, with 52 of these receiving one for the first time.

The remaining stars have been handed out to chefs or establishments which had already received at least one star in previous iterations of the annual guide.

Two restaurants – Le Gabriel in Paris and La Table du Castellet in Le Castellet (Var) received their third Michelin star, after already having two.

“This is a superb selection [of new chefs and restaurants], which shows the quality and quantity of France's culinary dynamism on the world stage,” said head of the guide Gwendal Poullennec.

More stars than previous years

The number of new stars handed out for 2024 is higher than in previous years.

In 2023, 44 new stars were handed out, with 39 of these being for the first time.

However, establishments in France still retained the highest number of stars, and in 2023 (not all areas have seen their 2024 guides released) there were 630 stars given out to restaurants across the country.

The next highest countries are Japan (547), Italy (395) and Germany (334).

There are 223 Michelin stars currently awarded in the US, and 206 in the UK and Ireland.

New restaurants from all over France

The region which saw the highest number of newly-starred restaurants was Île-de-France, with 12 of the 13 being located in the capital.

Elsewhere, 11 restaurants in Occitanie were granted their first star, and nine in Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, mostly in Savoie.

Nouvelle-Aquitaine saw three restaurants gain a star for the first time.

Guides expand portfolio

The guides have been branching out in recent years, and now provide an array of awards alongside the classic red stars.

This includes the ‘Bib gourmand’ (named after ‘Bibendum’ the Michelin Man) which shows restaurants where you can eat quality food for under a certain price point.

‘Green stars’ have been awarded since 2020 to restaurants that focus on sustainability, although unlike the traditional stars there is only one available per restaurant.

Michelin will also begin to start ranking hotels, using a ‘key’ symbol to highlight the country’s best.
