530 more speed cameras in 2010

Transport minister says better road safety measures will be unveiled ahead of this year's peak Christmas travel season

MORE than 500 new cameras are to be installed on roads throughout France next year.

The 2010 budget, which was unveiled yesterday, includes provision for 530 extra radars.

Transport Minister Dominique Bussereau said they would mostly be fixed on traffic lights in town centres and on railway level crossings.

The government will unveil heightened measures to improve road safety in the coming months, ahead of the peak Christmas travel period.

Some 414 people were killed on French roads in August, up 5.6% on the same month last year - a trend that Bussereau said must not be allowed to continue.
